Are Tattoos Safe?

As long as you go to a reputable artist that is following all recommended safety precautions, getting a tattoo is perfectly safe. Make sure you're fully honest about any medical conditions.

How old do I have to be to get tattooed?

  • You must be the minimum of 18 years of age to get tattooed on your own without parental consent.

  • You must be minimum 17 years of age to get tattooed with parental consent. Your legal guardian or parent must be present throughout the entire tattoo process and must present valid photo identification and sign on your behalf.

Can I get tattooed if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

  • We do not recommend getting tattooed if breastfeeding and do not tattoo pregnant persons. If you have any further questions we recommend speaking to your doctor prior to booking an appointment.

How long does it take a tattoo to heal?

Tattoos take between 7 to 15 days to go through the initial healing process.Sometimes a tattoo can look healed on the surface but the layers under the skin are still being repaired. Two months is on the longer spectrum of healing time by most standards, but it’s a good rule of thumb to make extra sure your skin has fully healed — we say this because products with SPF can irritate healing skin, so the two-month mark is a good rule of thumb to be extra-sure your skin has fully recovered.

Can I wash my tattoo?

Yes, you should wash your tattoo after 24 hours throughly with Dial anti-bacterial soap.Do not use a washcloth, use only your hands, gently wash and let it air dry for 15-20 minutes then apply the second skin. It is important that it is completely dry before applying the second skin.  If the water gets trapped, it causes moisture and an infection can develop. Do not soak the tattoo in water, swim, sauna etc. until the tattoo is completely healed.

The skin that is peeling is colored like the tattoo—is my tattoo coming off?

No, this is a natural part of a healing tattoo. The top layer of dead skin has been colored or dyed during the tattooing process. That outer layer will fall off revealing the fresh skin underneath.

My tattoo looks like it’s fading. Is that normal?

A tattoo is VERY bright when it is first completed but during the healing process, it starts to look discolored and dull. Don’t worry, when the tattoo is finished healing, the color will come back.

My tattoo is itching and scabbing. Is that normal?

Yes! Itchy and scabbing is typically normal and happens during the healing process of a tattoo. Just like any open wound, your body is creating its natural defence to guard it against infection while the skin underneath repairs itself. If the skin does scab, it’s very important that you don’t pick or pull at the scabs since that can pull out your ink and lead to scarring. Make sure you resist the temptation to scratch or peel off the skin as that can pull out your ink. To help with this maddeningly itchy, peeling phase, use Cetaphil or Create lotion generously to help relieve the itch.

My tattoo seems to be losing ink. It is runny, wet and it looks like the ink is coming out. What should I do?

It sounds like the tattoo is leaching. When too much lotion is applied, the body will naturally try to push whatever is on top off so it can breathe. Wash the tattoo off and pat it dry. Do not put anything on it for one day or 2. After that, start using lotion around three times a day—be sure not to over apply. Continue using the lotion until it heals completely. It may scab a bit, but do not pick the scabs—let them fall off naturally.

Does It Hurt?

Pain is really relative. Everyone has a different tolerance for pain. We're not going to kid you, though - it does hurt. Just not that much. Some have compared it to a "hot scratching feeling." But, people would not be returning again and again for tattoo after tattoo if it hurt that bad. Most of us are not into pain, but the beauty of the tattoo and the pride associated with wearing it far outweighs a little pin-stick here and there.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for my appointment?

Being tattooed can be stressful on your body. You’re being poked with a needle and it can be emotionally and physically exhausting. Come in well-rested and well-fed before your appointment.

Can I use numbing cream for my tattoo?

Most numbing creams that are available to the general public result in short term numbing and/or are topical creams that are not meant to be applied to open skin, cuts or abrasions. However if numbing cream makes you feel more comfortable before getting a tattoo make sure to follow the directions properly to avoid misuse.

Should I re-bandage my tattoo?

Yes, after removing the secondskin and washing throughly, air dry for 20 mins, you will apply the secondskin again and leave it for 5 days. This will be provided to you before leaving your appointment.

Are there any product you would recommend to aid in healing my tattoo?

We recommend any non-scented lotions (Cetaphil, Cerave) and Dial soaps to aid in the healing of your tattoo.

Can I use sunscreen on my tattoo while it is healing?

Sunscreen should not be used on a healing tattoo as it has many chemicals that can cause adverse reactions. You should keep the tattoo out of the sun until it is completely healed. Most artists recommend two weeks or more. After it is healed, you should always use sunscreenSPF 50+ if your tattoo is going to be exposed.

Can I shave/wax the area of my new tattoo?

It is best to wait until your tattoo has fully healed before shaving/waxing the area. Shaving/waxing over scabbing, flaking, peeling and or dry skin can be dangerous and detrimental to the healing of your tattoo.

Can I bring my baby/kid with me to my appointment?

We love kids but we ask that you do not bring your children. While you may have the most well-behaved kids in the world … our studio is not the best place to hang out. It’s boring, and is not a good place to crawl around in while our artist are trying to concentrate. Thanks for understanding.

WULT offer one free complementary touch up on work originally tattooed by them within three months of receiving their tattoo. However it is taken case by case basis. Tattoos exempted from a free touch up include; hands, feet, fingers, necks and any case involving individuals who had a blatant disregard for the aftercare given to them.
